Who Operates Unleash Literacy

Unleash Literacy is operated by Literacy Lab, LLC. This policy covers unleashliteracy.com, the Unleash learner application, and the parent dashboard. The service is designed to be set up and managed by a parent or legal guardian.

Information Parents Provide

We collect the parent or guardian's name, email address, login credentials, learner profile name, subscription and billing status, support messages, and choices made for a learner. Payment-card details are collected and processed by our payment provider rather than stored by Unleash.

Learner and Lesson Information

We collect lesson activity, answers, attempts, progress, assessment results, recognized speech text, pronunciation or accuracy scores, and related technical diagnostics. We do not ask a learner for an email address, phone number, or home address. A learner's voice and speech transcript can be personal information, so we limit speech data to the purposes described in this policy.

How Speech-Graded Lessons Work

When a learner chooses to speak in a speech-graded lesson, the browser captures a short voice response. Depending on the activity, the audio is sent securely either through Unleash's servers or directly through a short-lived connection to a speech-service provider. The provider returns a transcript, pronunciation assessment, or score used to give immediate feedback.

By default, Unleash processes raw audio only for grading and does not save the recording after the response is processed. We do save recognized text, scores, pass or retry results, and related learning metadata as part of the learner's progress record. Operational logs may also contain recognized text, expected lesson text, scores, and technical diagnostics, but not the raw audio file.

A parent or legal guardian may separately opt in to saving recordings submitted for grading. Saved recordings may be accessed by authorized internal Unleash administrators for support and internal product, instructional, and speech-recognition improvement. They are not made public or used for advertising. This optional storage does not affect grading or lesson access, and a recording-storage failure does not block learner progress.

Speech-Service Providers

OpenAI processes audio for transcription and realtime transcription and may process recognized text for grading. Unleash disables response storage for text-grading requests. OpenAI states that API data is not used to train its models unless the customer opts in. Its published endpoint controls state that the audio-transcription endpoint has no abuse-monitoring or application-state retention; Realtime and text-evaluation content may appear in abuse-monitoring logs for up to 30 days unless stronger account-level retention controls apply.

Amazon Bedrock processes recognized text and lesson context using OpenAI GPT-5.6 Terra only as a fallback when a direct OpenAI text-grading request fails; Unleash does not send learner audio to Bedrock. AWS states that Bedrock inputs and outputs are not used to train models or shared with model providers and are not stored by default. For GPT-5.6 Terra, traffic flagged by automated abuse classifiers may be retained by AWS for up to 30 days unless full Zero Data Retention has been approved for the account.

Deepgram processes audio for speech-to-text transcription. Every Unleash request sets Deepgram's model-improvement opt-out. Deepgram states that opted-out request data is retained only for the time necessary to process the request.

Microsoft Azure Speech processes audio and reference text for pronunciation assessment. Microsoft states that it does not retain or store customer data for realtime speech-to-text or pronunciation assessment.

SpeechAce processes audio and the expected phoneme sequence for pronunciation scoring. We do not send the learner's name, email, Unleash profile ID, or account ID. SpeechAce states that it does not use API audio to train its models and that audio retention is controlled by the API customer's contractual retention setting and used only to provide the request or support.

Other Service Providers and Sharing

We use service providers to host and secure the platform, deliver email, process payments, monitor errors, measure optional marketing activity, and provide customer support. These providers may process only the information needed for their services. Key providers include Amazon Web Services for hosting and operational logs, Stripe for payments, Resend for transactional email, and Sentry for error monitoring. Optional marketing-site analytics or advertising tags are controlled through Cookie Settings. We do not sell learner personal information, use learner information for targeted advertising, or allow speech providers to market to learners.

How We Use Information

We use information to operate accounts, deliver and personalize lessons, grade learner responses, show progress, provide support, prevent abuse, maintain security, process subscriptions, communicate with parents, and improve the reliability and instructional quality of the service. We do not use a child's personal information for behavioral advertising.

Data Retention

Unless a parent or legal guardian separately opts in, raw voice recordings are not stored by Unleash after the response is processed. Provider-side handling is described in Speech-Service Providers above.

Under the standard recording-storage option, submitted recordings are kept while the learner actively uses Unleash. After 12 months without learning activity, the learner's recordings are scheduled for permanent deletion and deleted within 30 days. Turning future recording storage off does not delete recordings already saved; a parent may request their deletion separately at any time. Some families may receive and accept separate extended-retention terms, which identify the applicable retention and deletion conditions.

Learner transcripts, scores, attempts, and progress are kept while the account remains active so families can review progress and the program can adapt lessons. Production operational logs are ordinarily retained for 180 days. We delete account, learning, and other active-system records within 30 calendar days after verifying a deletion request, except for limited records we must retain for billing, fraud prevention, security, dispute resolution, or legal obligations. Backup deletion may follow the applicable backup rotation.

Aggregated or de-identified statistics that cannot reasonably be linked back to a learner may be kept to understand and improve the service.

Parent Choices and Rights

A parent or legal guardian may ask what learner information we maintain, review or correct it, stop future recording storage, separately request deletion of saved recordings, or request deletion of the learner profile or account. We verify account ownership before fulfilling a request. We will not require a child to disclose more personal information than is reasonably necessary to participate in an activity. Requests can be sent to [email protected] or made using our data deletion instructions.

Cookies and Tracking

We use essential cookies for authentication, security, and session management. On our public marketing site, optional analytics and ad-measurement technologies are governed by the choices presented in Cookie Settings. We do not place advertising trackers in speech requests or use learner speech data for advertising.

Data Security

We use safeguards designed to protect personal information, including HTTPS/TLS encryption in transit, access controls, short-lived provider credentials where available, data-minimizing provider requests, and operational monitoring. No system can be guaranteed completely secure.

U.S. State Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights to access, correct, delete, or obtain a copy of personal information and to appeal a denied request. We do not discriminate against anyone for exercising an applicable privacy right.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as our practices or legal obligations change. We will provide parents notice of material changes and obtain new parental consent before beginning processing that requires it.
